Ed’s letter
Do you ever wonder why people choose one restaurant over another, or what makes them come back for more? Understanding dining behaviour isn’t just about knowing how often people eat out, it’s about uncovering the why behind their choices. From craving comfort food to chasing the latest foodie trends, customer decisions are shaped by everything from social media buzz to economic shifts.
Eat Out, in proud partnership with Yoco, conducted surveys to gauge the current trends within the South African restaurant industry. We targeted both diners and restaurateurs, which enabled us to compile a comprehensive oversight into how the industry is faring, including the things diners like the most – and those they are totally averse to. As South Africa’s leading website for the restaurant industry, acting as a conduit between diners and restaurateurs, Eat Out was perfectly positioned to conduct this survey.
Carl Wazen, co-founder of Yoco, says:
“As a partner to South Africa’s restaurant industry, we’re proud to support those who create unforgettable dining experiences. Success lies in knowing your customer – and evolving with them. At Yoco, we’re here to help restaurants thrive through it all.”
The survey ran on Eat Out’s website and the results highlighted some key trends, as well as areas where the response from diners and restaurateurs differed significantly – all of which can contribute to understanding dining-out habits better.
It’s interesting to note that there is longevity in the South African restaurant industry. The take-away restaurant owner respondents came from an even mix of fledgling restaurant owners and seasoned players, with:
28% of owners being open for less than a year
36% being open from between one to three years
32% being open for more than 10 years
56% of sit-down owners have been around for more than five years
In contrast, however, 24% have been around for one to three years
11% have been around for less than a year
We hope these insights inspire you to take your restaurant to the next level. Knowing your customers, staying ahead of the competition and keeping a pulse on industry trends can make all the difference. With the right knowledge and strategies, you can create unforgettable dining experiences, build a loyal following and set your restaurant up for long-term success.

Key takeaways from the report
Customer behaviour is shifting. Cafes, bakeries, and casual dining spots remain favourites, with most people eating out at least once a month. But fine dining? That’s more of a special occasion treat.
Word of mouth still reigns supreme. Over 80% of diners say they’re likely to try a restaurant based on a friend or family member’s recommendation - even more than social media or online reviews.
Food quality is non-negotiable. 95% of diners say it’s the number one reason they choose a restaurant. Cleanliness, service, and price follow closely behind.
Restaurants are navigating real challenges. From staff training and inventory management to cash flow issues and load-shedding disruptions, running a restaurant in South Africa isn’t for the faint-hearted.
The future is flavourful and flexible. Diners are looking for unique experiences, health-conscious meals, and sustainable practices - but preferences vary by region.
