I never thought I’d work in tech, let alone fintech. My career path started in international relations, but along the way, I found myself drawn to product management - particularly in fast-moving, problem-solving environments. This curiosity led me to Yoco, a company that’s reimagining financial solutions for South African business owners.
Since joining, I’ve had the chance to work on innovative products that directly impact entrepreneurs, helping them manage their cash flow and grow their businesses. The dynamic environment, combined with a culture of openness and collaboration, makes Yoco a unique and rewarding place to build products that matter.
Finding my way to Yoco
As with many careers, mine took shape in unexpected ways. I was working for an NGO when I first heard about Yoco through one of its early investors. At the time, I was just starting to look into fintech, particularly how payments infrastructure was evolving in different parts of the world. Later, while working at Adyen, I crossed paths with a former colleague who had moved on to Uber and then Yoco. And Yoco came back onto my radar.
After spending years in a large-scale, global fintech environment, I was eager to work at a company where I could have more direct impact - and coming from the Netherlands, I was excited to explore the African market. I reached out to the same ex-colleague at Yoco to learn more.
From my very first conversations, it felt like a natural fit. The interview process was refreshingly open and informal. I met multiple people I’d be working with, which gave me a strong sense of the culture. Learning about the deeper vision behind Yoco made me excited about joining the mission.
Ultimately, what drew me in was Yoco’s commitment to solving real problems for business owners.
The fast-paced, ever-evolving nature of a startup-scale company, combined with a strong sense of purpose, made my decision easy.
I get to help shape products that empower business owners and entrepreneurs; creating a real impact in people’s lives. It’s very rewarding.
This was exactly the kind of work I was looking for.
Making an impact at Yoco
One of the things that keeps me engaged at Yoco is the fast-paced and ever-changing nature of the environment. The landscape is dynamic - what works today might not work tomorrow. This constant evolution keeps me on my toes.
Product management at Yoco is about balancing commercial objectives with technology to solve real business challenges. But what stands out to me the most is how this experience has shaped my own growth. Working here has expanded my ability to adapt, prioritise and understand customer needs in a fast-changing market.
I’ve been exposed to diverse challenges in the South African market, which has strengthened my problem-solving skills. It’s also given me the opportunity to work on meaningful, high-impact solutions.
We’re enabling business owners to thrive, and I can see the difference our solutions make.
I’ve developed a stronger product mindset in terms of building features and creating solutions that enable businesses to grow and operate more effectively.
Building solutions that matter
Our customers are entrepreneurs who rely on their businesses to sustain themselves and their families. This means that the tools we build need to be intuitive, reliable and impactful in helping them succeed.
A big part of my role is gathering data and insights to understand our customers’ challenges. We don’t rely on surface-level assumptions - we engage directly with business owners to uncover their real pain points.
Our customers’ feedback shapes everything we build.
For example, while digital payments are growing rapidly in South Africa, some businesses still navigate a mix of cash and digital transactions. Which presents unique challenges - how do we make digital payments even more accessible and seamless? How do we help our customers manage cash flow more predictably?
We’re not just optimising existing processes; we’re creating solutions that help businesses transition into new ways of operating.
Working on the Yoco App gave me a whole new perspective on UX and how our customers think. Even the smallest design choices can change the way people use our products, and cultural and behavioural nuances play a huge role in how they engage with them.
At Yoco, solving customer problems goes beyond just launching products - it’s about creating meaningful, long-term change in how businesses operate and grow.
Working in Yoco’s unique culture
As I’ve mentioned, we operate in a fast-moving, ever-evolving environment at Yoco.
Adaptability is an essential skill to navigate constantly emerging opportunities.
It makes it an exciting and fulfilling place to work, but we need to be comfortable with ambiguity and open to change.
Our offices have a relaxed, informal vibe - everyone knows each other, even if they’re not on the same team. It’s a space where collaboration comes naturally and feedback is valued.
We’re encouraged to challenge ideas and speak our mind, knowing that our perspectives will be taken seriously.
One of the things I appreciate most is the emphasis on clarity and simplicity. Product management can get complex. There’s collaboration between different teams, changing priorities and technical considerations. But we’re encouraged to strip things down to their core and focus on the essence of the problem.
This approach helps ensure our solutions serve a real purpose, it keeps us aligned and prevents unnecessary complexity.
I also love being part of a global team, as it means I can learn from different perspectives, cultures and ways of working.
The diversity of thought within Yoco pushes me to think differently and constantly refine my approach to my work.
We’re not just building products — we’re building solutions that embed seamlessly into businesses, removing friction and helping them grow. This is what makes my work at Yoco so meaningful.
